«Well done Tourisme Massy ! And bravo Damien ! Your town becomes a major step on the Santiago route. You inform, you accommodate the pilgrims and you guide them. They will proceed through Champlan, the Orge (local stream) Valley etc. etc. towards Orléans, Tours , Poitiers, Bordeaux, the Paris Way in a nutshell ! » (Jean François

Olivier is the Frenchman who has introduced us to Mengjui. They had met on the island of Shikoku in Japan on another pilgrimage…

Under 30, very tall, always smiling and a positive mind, that’s what Menjui,  a specialist of asian healing,  looks like.

He is surprised to discover a hidden garden in the center of Paris, and, very open minded, he is ready to meet whoever gets in contact with him.

After a few days touring in the French capital, departure on June the 11th, from the St James Tower.

At the foot of the Notre-Dame cathedral, near the statue of Saint James, Olivier gives him his dearest belonging : his own scallop shell. Later he will cut a hazelnut branch for him to be used as a walking stick.

Further down on the same day, Mengjui will take a picture of a bronze mark in the shape of a stylized shell. Pilgrims like such signs !

You have been shown the bronze marks at Gif-sur-Yvette in the newspaper published here.

Extra bonus : Since may 2016 the pilgrim who reaches the Valley of Chevreuse receives a warm welcome. A sign that shows encouragement and recognition.

You can see it from the road, so that whoever passes by is invited to wear his or her walking shoes and take his or her backpack and walking stick.

The First Bronze Waymarks In The Paris Area

54 shells

Mr Michel Bournat, Mayor of Gif-sur-Yvette and part of the audience

Mr Michel Bournat, Mayor of Gif-sur-Yvette and part of the audience

In France, the Mayor is a main figure of the population in most places.

On the 25th of June 2016, Gif-sur-Yvette, a little town of 20 000 inhabitants located 25 miles south-west of Paris, inaugurated the first bronze waymarks of the Camino in the Paris Region. The bronze marks exist in Belgium, in the Netherlands or in Germany and of course in French and Spanish cities. Strange enough, so far there were not any in the region of the French capital town.

In a simple way, without extra decorum, Mr Michel Bournat, mayor, made a speech about our Way of St James, a speech with which everyone agreed.

Hurray for the town of Gif-sur-Yvette !

The local newspaper showing the shell.

The City Council and particularly Mrs Christine Laurent, have worked with some members of the local association to make sure the 54 bronze marks would look the same as elsewhere on the same path, and they would be put the right way.

The walking pilgrim's paradise

Earlier in the morning she waited for a special group of walkers who had discovered the first bronze shell, and other things. Then she guided the whole party through the city centre as far as the last shell where later a welcome drink was offered. Explanations on the Saint Rémi church, the town hall, and the main park.

A great moment for a great Way of St James, the Paris Way !

The local association has successfully worked on the creation of a pilgrims accomodation in the city center. Congratulations ! Good news for the walkers who pass or depart from Paris !

This accommodation is managed by the association Compostelle 45 with the help of the rectory of the Cathedral, a magnificent stone vessel of the town where you still perceive the passage of the kings of France and of course, Joan of Arc.

I‘ll push you to Santiago

A nightmare or a dream ?

Before the start in the French Basque country

Before the start in the French Basque country

This is the story of two friends who live in California. Justin and Patrick were born in the same hospital, 36 hours apart. They grew up together, travelled together, faced the same challenges...

Justin is the father of  two children when he learns that he is suffering from a progressive neurological disorder. His arms and his legs no longer follow the orders of the brain. Paralysis. And currently there is no cure.

He accidentally hears about  the Way of St. James. He later said "I cannot say that I looked for the camino, it found me."

When he asks himself  "I wonder whether I could do it in a wheelchair?" His friend Patrick answers :  " I’ll push you".

Patrick works in the medical field, he will look after his friend and push him all along the 500 miles of the road.

With a special wheelchair off they go two years later, from  Saint Jean Pied de Port, half-way between the major French departure points and the far west of Spain

I‘ll push you to Santiago

On the most difficult parts, some pilgrims volunteer to give a hand, but most of the time Justin is pushed by one man only. After 34 days they get to the square of the Cathedral of St James of Compostela.

A pilgrim’s walk

Landscape Study Towards Santiago de Compostela

The  Way of Saint James has a thousand faces. Vincenza has examined the landscape side, especially in the Ile de France, the Paris Region.   Her studies at the prestigious Versailles National School of Landscape Architecture has led her to remarkable texts and sketches . Examples:

Landscape Study Towards Santiago de Compostela
Landscape Study Towards Santiago de Compostela

" I tried to materialize a path to wonder, because motivation feeds surprise, and motivation is the engine of the pilgrim. "

Landscape Study Towards Santiago de Compostela

"From the village of Soulaire you can see the spires of the Chartres cathedral in the far distance. Such a moving vision ! You feel like flying to reach the church."

Landscape Study Towards Santiago de Compostela

" My approach as a walker, so empirical , helped me to free myself from my a priori , to look at things from a different point of view, to express a new language, the language of the story and of the drawings ... The subject has switched from the path as it is, physical and material, to the path as an instrument of discovery of the landscape."

"The trail becomes heritage, and with it the action of walking . "

The greatest present from Vincenza is the drawing that makes us understand why we feel so free on the way. “As the walker goes, the interaction lies three ways : a linear relation with the path, a spacial relation with the environment, and a vertical relation with the sky and topography. There is even a fourth dimension : time, either as it is as you cross the space, i.e. minutes and hours, or the changing of the seasons.“
